About Me
I’m Sarah, I have a degree in Theology and Counselling & Psychotherapy. I am a mother, animal lover and all-round creative person. I have four dogs and two cats - you are likely to meet the cats if we meet online.
I have been working as a Psychotherapist, running my own private practice for over five years, where everyone is welcome. I have a specialism in working with addiction and have a lot of experience working with significant trauma.
I have a passion for working with creativity. I often work with creative people and always bring my own creative thinking into my work, which means it is often full of imagination and laughter. I believe playfulness is the enemy of depression. Life is so often boring and tough, and I wish everyone would join me in re-discovering how to play.
I also draw, sing and write whenever I can. I take commissions for hyperrealistic pet portraits, which appeal to the detail-oriented parts of myself. I find I am particularly talented at conveying a sense of the animal’s personality. However, I long to have more freedom of expression with my artwork and always have the best intentions to carve out some more time to explore those parts of myself too.
About Therapy
I am a relational, psychodynamic psychotherapist. This means I believe in the unconscious mind and its influence on our lives and interactions. The formation of the unconscious begins from our earliest experiences and is finely tuned with every significant interaction. This can shape how we live our lives and feel about ourselves, often loaded with shame and driving us away from who we truly are.
I don’t offer quick fixes or strategies and I don’t claim to be the expert on anyone else’s life other than my own. I work collaboratively, focusing on the relationship emerging between us. I discover what it feels like to be in relationship with you, and together we can grapple with what stands in the way of true connection. I can offer to sit beside you as I attempt to truly understand you and your experiences. This way of working isn’t for everyone - it can be slow and it can be frightening to not have a clear plan of action, but it can be so powerful to not have to do all of that alone.
Initial Session
The first session is to get an idea of your expectations and if we might be a good fit for working together.
I will be interested to find out what has brought you here and what you hope to achieve. I will also explain my approach and philosophy. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about me and my work.
If we both agree, there will be a contract to read through together and sign. This outlines procedures such as confidentiality, payments and cancellations. Otherwise, I will signpost to appropriate agencies or refer to colleagues wherever possible.
We will usually agree to meet once a week, at the same time and day. Fees are £90 for 50 minutes and are paid by bank transfer on the day of the session. The initial session is charged at £45.
My practice is located in Cambridge, close to Mill Road. It is accessible by car, public transport or on foot. The room is suitable for wheelchair use.
